How to Avoid Spain Digital Nomad Visa Renewal Problems

Spain Digital Nomad Visa renewal problems start on day one. Start planning then for success.

Spain Digital Nomad Visa renewal problems can begin in the first month of the permit, not at the renewal itself. The most common is late Social Security registration. The Unidad de Grandes Empresas y Colectivos Estratégicos (UGE) now cross-checks two complete years of Spanish tax returns against your invoicing, and expects self-employed holders to register as autónomo within roughly 15 days of approval. Late registration can be back-dated, at a cost.

My Digital Nomad Visa renewal was approved in August 2026, and it came closer to failing than I would like. Not because of my income, and not because of anything submitted at renewal. What nearly stopped it was a decision I made in my first few months in Spain, when I registered with Social Security eight months after my visa was granted. The UGE found it three years later and gave me ten days to put it right.

“If you hold a DNV, your renewal begins as soon as your original visa is granted. It starts from what you do in your first month, not from what you file in your last.“

What Every Spain DNV Holder Should Know

  • Your renewal starts on the day your visa is granted, not 60 days before it expires (the earliest you can begin the renewal process)
  • Start collecting documentation earlier than you think you need to. The window opens 60 days before expiry, but I was pulling documents together a good two months before that
  • If you are self-employed, register with Spanish Social Security immediately. Late registration is the single thing that nearly cost me my permit
  • If you registered late, back-register now. It is expensive, it is possible, and it is far easier to do now than under a ten-day deadline
  • The first answer you get in Spain is not always the correct one. I was told back-registration was impossible. It was not
  • A request for more documents from the UGE is not a refusal
  • Use a professional. Having completed both the application and the renewal, this is not the place to save money. Our immigration lawyer partners handle DNV renewals routinely, and our tax partners can tell you whether your filing history will stand up to the check

Thinking about Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa?

Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa allows you to live and work remotely in Spain. Qualifying depends on your income, employment setup, and nationality. Get it wrong, and you risk delays, rejections, or ending up on the wrong visa entirely. Your Renewal Starts the Day Your Visa Is Granted

I was in the first wave of Digital Nomad Visa holders. I applied in August 2023 and was granted the visa in the September, which at the time meant working out the process as I went along. It was not sketchy, exactly, but the new process was not clearly defined, and it felt a bit like the Wild West of visas.

Three things start the moment you have your visa, and all three feed into your renewal process three years later:

  1. Your TIE.
You are expected to apply for your TIE card within one month of your visa being issued. In practice, the police appointment system was close to unusable in 2023. Slots were being taken by bots and resold. I did not get mine until February 2024, six months in. I also learned that you can normally only apply in the province where you live. I was offered an appointment in Valencia, took it on my gestor’s advice, and was turned away because I lived in a different province. I eventually got an appointment in Reus, in Tarragona, which was outside my province but permitted at the time under exceptions made to clear the appointment backlog.
  2. Social Security
If you are self-employed, register as soon as you can. More on this below, because this is where I came unstuck.
  3. Your Tax Position
Even if you arrive late in the year and do not become a Spanish tax resident, you can still be liable for Spanish non-resident tax for that period. The advice you hear about arriving after 2 or 3 July is only half the story. It means you are not taxed as a Spanish resident that year. It does not always mean you owe nothing.
The UGE’s own position, set out by its director, Luis Esteban, at a September 2026 industry session, goes further: every DNV holder should file a Spanish tax declaration for each year of the permit, whether or not they are a fiscal resident that year, and whether or not any tax is actually due. Exemptions depend on the double taxation agreement between Spain and your home country, so this is a question for your gestor or tax lawyer, not one to work out yourself.

The Mistake That Nearly Cost Me My Renewal

[This section applies to self-employed DNV holders. If you hold the visa as an employee of a foreign company and remain in your home country’s Social Security system (evidenced by a US Certificate of Coverage or a UK/EU A1 certificate) you do not need to register with Spanish Social Security, even though you still hold the private health insurance the visa requires.]

There was a belief circulating in 2023, on DNV Facebook groups and other forums, and among some immigration lawyers, that you could not register with Social Security or become autónomo until you had your TIE. I believed it. And since my TIE took six months, I did not register until May 2024, eight months after my visa was granted.

That belief was wrong, and it cost me.

By the time I came to renew, the UGE had tightened up considerably, both on the rules that sit in law and on expectations it applies that do not. One of those expectations is that self-employed holders register as autónomo immediately after approval. Not a fortnight later, and certainly not eight months later.

Speaking in September 2026, the UGE’s director declined to give a safe number of days but suggested that 15 days is more than enough. He also made the consequence explicit: late registration can void the authorization. Keep proof of the date you applied.

“My solicitor told me plainly that eight months would not get past the UGE.“

Mike Bailey, Writer at Moving to Spain and DNV holder

I applied anyway, knowing the gap was there. On day 20 of the 20 days the UGE has to respond, they came back with a request for more documents, a requerimiento. I asked my solicitor whether that was effectively a no. It was not. Unsurprisingly, what it wanted was for me to back-register my Social Security from May 2024 to September 2023, a back-dated alta in RETA (the Régimen Especial de Trabajadores Autónomos, the Social Security scheme self-employed workers in Spain pay into). That was the thing I had been told three years earlier was impossible. I had ten natural days to do it, with a short extension available on request.

Can You Back-Register Social Security in Spain?

Yes. A reputable tax agency professional can do this.

This is the part I want DNV holders to know.

I found a tax agency who told me, in her first response, that it could be done, and that she had done something similar recently. She contacted the Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social (TGSS) on my behalf using my digital certificate and requested the back-registration. This took about four or five days.

Four days later, I got the notification from the TGSS of what I had to pay. I paid immediately.

From the UGE request landing to the documents going back to the UGE was eight or nine days. Because the office had already used its 20 days on the original application, it had to respond quickly once I submitted, and the approval came through three days later.

What it cost me:

What I Paid ForDetail
Unpaid contributionsThe Social Security contributions for the whole back-dated period
Loss of the reduced rateI gave up the reduced first-year rate (tarifa plana) of about 80 euros a month and paid the full rate for that period instead
SurchargeA penalty amount on top
Total€3,000 – €10,000 (depending on circumstances)

What the UGE Wants Now That It Did Not in 2023

The headline change is that a letter from your employer or client is no longer enough on its own. The office now wants two years of Spanish tax returns, and it checks that what you declared lines up with what you invoiced. Interestingly, it asked for the last two complete tax years only, in my case 2024 and 2025, not my whole time in Spain.

Three things have hardened since 2023, all of them confirmed by the UGE in September 2026:

  • Income is verified at source. What you have actually reported to Hacienda is what counts as proof of income, not what you state you earn. The cross-check is direct.
  • Renewal approvals have fallen since tax returns became a standard supporting document. That is the office’s own observation, and it is the clearest signal there is that the tax side of your file is now where renewals are won or lost.
  • Processing is slower, because the office is spending a large share of its time detecting irregular and fraudulent applications. It handles roughly 140 to 150 primary applications a day before dependents are counted.

“One more thing worth saying plainly: be wary of anyone offering a fast, cheap, or guaranteed approval.“

What I Would Do With a DNV Renewal 6 to 12 Months Away

“If you know you have a gap, whether that is Social Security, unfiled tax, or a mismatch between what you invoiced and what you declared, fix it now. Not at renewal.“

Mike Bailey, Writer at Moving to Spain and DNV holder

Back-registration under a ten-day clock is not an experience I want to repeat. Clearing the issue early costs the same money and removes both the time pressure and risk of the UGE raising it mid-renewal application. Going into a renewal with nothing for them to find is a good position to be in.

Start earlier than you think you need to. The window opens 60 days before expiry, and I was pulling documents together a good two months before that. With processing times stretched by the office’s fraud checks, that head start matters more now than it did before.

Get a second opinion. I was told by an asesor, someone I had no reason to doubt, that back-registration was not possible. Not that he would not do it, that it could not be done. Three years later a specialist did it in under a week. That is a lesson about Spain generally, not just about visas.

Use a professional. Having now done both the application and the renewal, this is not the time to save money. Our immigration lawyer partners handle DNV renewals routinely, and our tax partners can tell you whether your filing history will stand up to the check.

It Is Not the Wild West Anymore

The rules are stricter and more strictly enforced than when I applied, and some of what the UGE expects is not written down anywhere. Spain Digital Nomad Visa renewal problems are not going away.

In terms of what is demanded of you, that has become harder. But immigration lawyers now have regular contact with the UGE, so changes tend to be known, often with the reasoning behind them. It is still grey in places, but it is nothing like the guesswork of 2023. The process is harder, but more predictable.

FAQ: Spain Digital Nomad Visa Renewal Problems

Can you back-register Social Security in Spain after registering late?

Yes. A Spanish tax agency or gestor can request a back-dated registration with the Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social on your behalf using your digital certificate. In my case it took four or five days. You should expect to pay the contributions for the back-dated period, to lose the reduced new-autónomo rate (tarifa plana) for that period, and to pay a surcharge on top.

How quickly do I need to register as autónomo after my DNV is approved?

Quickly. The UGE has not published a safe number of days, but its director indicated in September 2026 that registering within 15 days is comfortably sufficient. Keep evidence of the date you applied, since late registration can void your authorization.

Will a late Social Security registration get my DNV renewal refused?

Not automatically. In my case the UGE issued a request for more documents rather than a refusal, and asked me to back-register the missing period. The renewal was then approved. The safer approach is to correct the gap before you file, so the issue never reaches your application.

Is a request for more documents from the UGE a rejection?

No. It is a common step in the process. You have a short deadline to respond, so have your representative ready to act quickly.

When should I start preparing my DNV renewal?

The application window opens 60 days before your permit expires. I started gathering documents and speaking to my immigration lawyer around two months before that, so roughly four months out. If you have a compliance gap to fix, start six to twelve months out.

What does the UGE ask for at renewal that it did not ask for in 2023?

Two complete years of Spanish tax returns, and a check that your declared income is consistent with your invoicing.
