Mike Bailey

Originally from the UK, Mike is a confirmed hispanophile. So much so that he has moved to Spain not once, but twice! Now here to stay, he brings a unique perspective on moving to, and living in Spain before and after Brexit.

Mike loves the Spanish life and culture. From menús del día and paellas to football matches starting at 10pm and eating twelve grapes at midnight on New Year’s Eve, there is very little he doesn’t enjoy.

A freelance marketer, Mike has worked in many countries and cultures. It is rare a client request surprises. Off duty he loves sport, cycling and walking — especially along the Mediterranean in Benicàssim where he lives with his partner and two lurcher dogs.

BEST SPANISH CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

Being in a bar in my pueblo watching Spain win the World Cup Final in 2010. When Iniesta scored the place erupted into the biggest outpouring of public joy I have seen. The after party went on beyond daybreak!

EMBARRASSING SPANISH LANGUAGE FAIL

In a restaurant, making my first attempts to speak Spanish with a group of work colleagues, I intended to say ‘tengo hambre‘ (‘I am hungry’), but nervously announced ‘tengo hombre’ (‘I have a man’).

MOST USED SPANISH PHRASE

‘Me encanta España’ (‘I love Spain’). I say this most days when yet another thing (great or small) happens to make me feel happy and privileged to live in this uniquely wonderful country.
