Why Understanding Your Spanish Tax Position Before You Move Matters

TIming your move and sale of property and assets is vital.

Selling property or assets at the wrong time relative to your move to Spain can create capital gains tax that could have been avoided. Once a sale is completed, the outcome cannot be changed.

The Right Structure can unlock favourible Spanish Tax Provisions

Some Spanish tax regimes are only available if specific conditions are met at the right moment. Without early advice, people often miss opportunities such as the Beckham Law, or fail to structure their arrival and employment in a favourable way.

Why Where You Live in Spain Matters for Tax.

Spain is not a single tax environment. The 17 autonomous communities apply different rules, allowances, and rates, particularly for wealth tax, inheritance tax, and regional deductions. Deciding where to live before understanding these differences can materially affect your long-term tax exposure.

1000+ Tax Consultations

Louis was unlike two other Spanish tax professionals I had previously chatted with. Louis was helpful, specific and during our conversation used my actual situation and finances to quickly craft a simulation of what my Spanish taxes would look like. It was amazingly helpful as the previous two I chatted with, recommended by others, ghosted me and one charged me a lot for a consultation and still left me nowhere closer to understanding my actual tax burden than when we began.

We have been using Moving To Spain for assistance/guidance moving from California/Nevada to Sitges/Barcelona. We have used consultants with immigration (immigration attorney), tax consulting and rental/real estate search. ALL of our interactions with MTS have been EXCELLENT. We have a very complicated situation with our finances, dogs, schedules, changing schedules, complex vehicles and insurance, and MTS has been our partner all along the way. I actually cannot imagine trying to do this move without their guidance. I could not provide a more positive recommendation - they are all EXCELLENT to work with!!!!

From being confused and a bit overwhelmed with questions, to being informed and secure with our move, we truly could not have done it without the help of the team at MovingtoSpain.com. Our lawyers, accountants/tax advisors, real estate team and health insurance agents have been more than helpful - they've been over the top in terms of excellence, making sure we understood everything, and super responsive all along the way. If you're considering a move to Spain, this is the company - their services are top notch and the frequent webinars were helpful and very clear. We've been crowing about them to all of our friends who have an interest in moving to Spain too!!

Working with Moving to Spain has been an incredibly positive experience. In November 2024, my spouse and I decided to spend our retirement abroad, and after some deliberation decided to move to Spain. It became clear that in order to navigate the visa process, we would need help. Alison and Alastair have provided guidance and reassurance at every step, have assembled a great deal of online content on various aspects of moving to Spain, and have gathered a comprehensive team of subject matter experts - Raquel and the BeGlobal team for the visa process, ASSSA and Innoinsure and others for the (required) private health insurance, Louis at Extretramites for tax and finance guidance, and more. All were endlessly patient with my relentless questions and constant need for reassurance.

We decided to move to Murcia, a region less traveled by tourists and expats. Complicating our search for a rental house was that we would essentially be committing to a place without an initial exploratory trip. MtS initially didn't have a Murcia real estate contact, but they rapidly found Jessica from JustMurciaProperty. Jessica listened carefully to our preferences and offered a number of alternatives. She gave us an online video tour of the rental we settled on, coordinated with the rental agent and owner to respond to our (innumerable) questions, coordinated signing of the lease, and met us at the property with our keys when we moved there in mid-December 2025. After arriving, we needed further assistance in setting up internet service, and Jessica made the necessary contacts. Meanwhile, the BeGlobal legal team has provided ongoing support toward getting an NIE number and TIE identification card. Compared to horror stories I've read online from others with less preparation grappling with Spain's formidable bureaucracy, our relocation from the beginning to the present has rolled along smoothly as if on trolley tracks. I have only good things to say about Moving to Spain.

Thank you for checking in and following up

My consultation with Jevan at Exactly went well.
He was clear and broke down any tax related item that I needed more clarity or information.

He provided the information for my current plans and after the meeting provided a written synopsis of what we discussed. He also responded on a follow up question I had.

I discussed some future plans and he gave me some general guidance with that as well.

Appreciate your service and the partners that you have recommended.

As retirees, we were thrilled to discover MovingToSpain.com as it made our planning so much easier than going at it alone. The experts they made available to us - from immigration legal experts to finance and tax counselors, professional movers and real estate professionals have been invaluable. The advice is always practical and pragmatic. They took our life circumstances and made recommendations that made sense for us. We never were made to feel like we were using cookie cutter solutions. I would recommend MovingToSpain.com to anyone who is seriously considering a move. They are easy to talk to; quick to respond; and their counsel is grounded in reality.

Moving To Spain is a life saver, Alison and Alastair have put together a one stop information site that covers everything you need to know about the move. In my case, I am applying for the Non-Lucrative Visa. The website has a ton of information and their regular Zoom meetings cover all aspects of the move (applying for the visa, how to qualify and get approval; healthcare, both private and public, needed for visa approval; financial requirements and advice; what is and obtaining the NIE, TIE and the PADRON-certificate of registration where you live; Spanish tax system explained; how to pick where to live; guidance on renting or buying; opening a bank account and moving money; moving with pets; moving your possessions and cost and much more). They have partners that help with immigration , tax, financial issues and healthcare requirements, this has been extremely helpful. Also an incredible online moving checklist, moving budget planner and cost of living calculator. I did get one of their packages and had meetings with professionals dealing with the above. The immigration lawyers was a must for me, process to move is quite bureaucratic, their advice is really helpful. And communication with Alison and Alastair was very good. Highly recommend Moving To Spain, saved me a lot of time dealing with this process, no other service was as complete as them.

I’ve found Moving to Spain to be an invaluable resource throughout my relocation process. The website is clean, easy to navigate, and packed with some of the most helpful, well-informed articles, checklists, and guides I’ve found online. Alastair and Alison bring a very personal and human touch, sharing their own experience and know-how.

The quality of their recommended partners is consistently excellent. I’ve worked with many of them: Raquel for immigration, Louis for tax, Ciaran for healthcare, Nick for car insurance, Dean for FX strategy, and Nicole for financial planning. Each one has been proactive, responsive, friendly, knowledgeable, and solution-focused. I'd highly recommend each of them.

Moving to Spain has become my go-to resource for all things related to my international move as an expat, making a complex process far more manageable, informative, and straightforward. Definitely the best site out there for anyone considering a relocation to Spain. My sincere thanks.

We met Alison at an Expat Conference in San Antonio, TX over Memorial Day 2025 and couldn't have been more pleased our decision to work with Moving to Spain. Her genuine kindness and willingness to help others took away our initial fears of knowing who to trust and while you often aren't afforded the chance to meet a consultant in person like we did, rest assured, she is every bit someone you can trust. She not only promised BUT delivered huge with just the two (2) consultations we had. The personal relationships she has with the team she has assembled including a tax and immigration attorneys who were both excellent by the way were exactly what we needed. We feel soooo much more comfortable, not only in our decision to move to Spain, but using Moving to Spain to help usher us through the process with ease. Their website is packed with consolidation of information to help with the endless google searches; I know I often times found myself questioning what I read in one place but found a different page that suggested or contradicted or gave misleading and certainly confusing information. We would wholeheartedly recommend using Alison and Alistair.

Yes. Our tax advisors work with clients throughout Spain and understand the differences between the 17 autonomous communities, including regional wealth tax, inheritance tax allowances, and local deductions. This is particularly important when deciding where to live, as regional tax differences can materially affect your long-term tax exposure.

Yes. All tax consultations are conducted in fluent English, and our advisors have strong experience advising clients from the US, UK, and other international jurisdictions. Our taxation specialist partners understand how foreign income, assets, pensions, trusts, and companies are viewed under Spanish tax law and how double taxation treaties apply in practice.

Because timing and structure matter. Decisions made before you become Spanish tax resident — such as selling property, restructuring investments, or choosing where to live — can create irreversible tax consequences. Many expats pay avoidable capital gains, wealth, or income tax simply because they sought advice too late.

Our Spanish tax advisor partners specialise in cross-border Spanish tax for expats. They deal daily with international income, foreign assets, relocation planning, and treaty-based taxation. Online advice and non-specialist accountants often miss key details, while our advisors focus on real-world outcomes, not theoretical explanations — helping clients make informed decisions that genuinely reduce tax exposure and administrative burden.
