Carin Cowell — Málaga Rental & Property Expert

Carin Cowell is the founder of a well-established Costa del Sol buyer’s and renter’s agency based in Málaga City. Originally from the UK with Scandinavian roots, Carin has been investing in Spanish property since 2012, owning properties in Málaga, Seville, and Madrid. In 2021 she acquired her own sea-view family home in Málaga and since then has focused exclusively on helping others do the same.

She works as a tenant’s and buyer’s agent, meaning she acts solely for the person looking for a property, not for landlords or developers. Her services cover Málaga City, the east and west Costa del Sol, and Nerja, and she conducts her work bilingually in English and Spanish.

Carin regularly leads neighborhood tours for clients considering Málaga before committing to a specific area, and she has deep practical experience navigating the complexities of international relocations — rental contracts, off-market access, landlord negotiations, and the padrón process.

Why We Work With Carin

The Málaga rental market has tightened considerably since 2021. Supply is constrained, good properties move fast, and landlords can afford to be selective. For someone relocating from abroad — often needing to secure a home before they arrive, in a language that is not their own, in a city they may have visited only once — that market is genuinely difficult to navigate alone.

Carin lives and works in the city she covers. She knows which neighbourhoods suit families versus couples, which areas look good on a map but carry caveats, where you can save 200 or 300 euros a month by going one or two towns out, and where Marbella’s premium pricing begins. That local knowledge is what we look for in a housing partner.

She has worked with clients from the US, Canada, the UK, and across Europe, and she has consistently received strong client feedback on two things in particular: her honesty about what the market is actually like, and her persistence in finding properties that match the brief rather than pushing whatever is convenient to place.

We recommend Carin for:

  • Long-term rentals in Málaga City and the surrounding Costa del Sol
  • Neighbourhood consultations and scouting tours before committing to an area
  • Complex relocations where clients need contract support, landlord negotiation, and practical help on arrival
  • Families needing larger properties, parking, and access to specific school catchments
  • Clients relocating without having visited the area in person

What Carin Covers

Málaga City — the city centre, SoHo, and the eastern residential neighbourhoods close to the beach. Properties here suit those who want to be within walking distance of restaurants, cultural venues, and the waterfront. Carin is clear-eyed that the city commands a premium: it is a working city with genuine demand, not just a tourist market, and prices reflect that.

East Málaga — quieter, greener, and more residential than the centre. A 15-minute bus ride into the city. Carin lives in this part of the city and knows it in practical detail.

Costa del Sol west — Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, and beyond. Prices generally fall as you move west from Málaga City, with the exception of Marbella, where they rise sharply again. For clients with a family-sized budget of around €1,500 to €2,000 a month, this corridor offers more space and better value than central Málaga.

Inland and Alhaurín de la Torre — for clients who want a villa, a pool, and more land. You trade proximity for space, and Carin is honest about the trade-off: access to facilities requires a car, and local community integration matters more when you are further from the coast.

Nerja — a smaller coastal town on the eastern edge of the province, popular with buyers and renters looking for a quieter life with good access to the sea.

Carin in Her Own Words

Speaking at our Cost of Living Across Spain webinar in April 2026, Carin addressed the question of what €3,000 a month actually gets you in Málaga:

“Three thousand euros a month is on the higher end — it is not the entry level by any means. I regularly work with clients whose budget is half of this. €1,500 a month can get you a decent property; it will just be on a smaller scale. If you are looking for something more premium and you have a salary from abroad or you are living off savings, that is when this kind of budget comes into play.”

On the difference between city and suburban pricing:

“Living in Málaga City can be more premium. It is a working city — people need to live here because they work here, and that puts real demand on supply. As we move out, even just 15 minutes, we start to see prices tail off. You can save €200 to €300 a month by going one or two towns out. Until you hit Marbella — and when you hit Marbella, you are back above Málaga prices.”

On renting with pets, which comes up frequently with relocating families:

“Ballpark, around 70% of properties in your scope will consider pets. It varies by property type — a furnished city centre apartment will have more resistant owners than an unfurnished country villa. When it does come up, I work hard to pitch you as excellent tenants first, so that by the time the pet conversation happens, the landlord already wants you.”

Background

Carin studied at the University of St Andrews before building a career in digital marketing and conversion optimisation, working with enterprise clients across Europe. She relocated to Spain and became a property investor from 2012, building a portfolio across Málaga, Seville, and Madrid before establishing her own respected buying and renting agency on the Costa del Sol.

Her background in client success and data-driven decision-making shapes how she approaches property searches: she defines requirements precisely, filters options rigorously, and presents clients with real choices rather than padding a viewing schedule with unsuitable properties.

She holds a street-level office in her Málaga neighbourhood and interacts daily with the full local market — landlords, agencies, local residents, and incoming expats. That ground-level presence is what makes her assessment of the market accurate rather than theoretical.
